What the survey actually measured
Empower asked 2,202 US adults aged 18+ between 19 and 21 August 2025 what the going rate is for a range of occasions. The answers are usefully deflationary: every single occasion came in under $100, and the child’s birthday out-earns the adult’s by nearly thirty dollars. The same research found six in ten saying gifting culture has got “out of hand” and around half reporting gift fatigue — which is the context in which a $56 birthday gift should be read. It is not stingy. It is the number.
Scaling by relationship
Treat $56 as the centre of gravity and move outward from there: a coworker sits well below it (the surveyed workplace ceiling is $25), a friend sits around it, and an immediate-family birthday is the one occasion where people routinely double it without thinking twice. That scaling is our editorial judgement, not survey data — the only per-relationship birthday figure we could source is the workplace ceiling. Everything else here is an anchor plus a sense of proportion.
