How much to spend on a housewarming gift

$20–$75 covers most housewarming gifts. PocketWell’s July 2026 guidance puts coworkers and acquaintances at $15–$30, friends at $25–$50, and siblings or close family at $50–$100. Buy for the room, not the person.

A caveat on the numbers, up front

There is no good survey of housewarming gift spending. The ranges above come from PocketWell’s July 2026 guide, which is explicit that it is describing general US gifting norms rather than reporting a poll. We are publishing them because they are consistent with every other etiquette source we checked and because a cited range beats an invented one — but treat them as convention, not measurement. Where this site has actual survey data, we say so: see the wedding and coworker pages.

The rule that does the work: buy for the room, not the person

Housewarming is the easiest gift brief there is, and almost everyone gets it wrong by treating it like a birthday. You are not buying for a personality, you are buying for a house that is not finished yet. Somewhere in that place is a bare wall, an empty shelf, a kitchen with exactly one decent pan and a bathroom with builder-grade everything. Anything that fills one of those gaps is a good gift at any price in the band.

The corollary is the reason housewarming gifts are cheap to get right: the gap does not care what you spent. A well-chosen $30 object aimed at a real absence beats a $90 object aimed at nothing.

Two constraints outsiders get wrong

If they rent, they cannot hang it, drill it or paint it. That rules out most wall pieces and every fixture, which is a large fraction of what the housewarming aisle sells. And if you are attending the party rather than shipping ahead, weight matters: bring the thing that opens in one hand and ship the heavy thing separately.

Our cool housewarming gifts guide is organised by room in the order rooms actually stay bare, which is the fastest way to shop this. For a couple moving in together, the wedding shelf overlaps heavily and runs a band higher.

Now spend it well

You have the number. These are the shelves that fit it.

Common questions

Is $25 enough for a housewarming gift?

Yes. $25 sits inside the published range for a coworker, an acquaintance and a friend, and above the floor of the overall $20–$75 band.

Do you bring a gift to a housewarming party?

Yes, and bring it with you rather than shipping if it is light. If it is heavy or fragile, ship it ahead and arrive with something small — nobody wants to carry a Dutch oven around a party.

What if they are renting?

Skip anything that needs a drill, a nail or paint. Renters can’t install fixtures and often can’t hang art, so aim at the kitchen, the bar cart, the bathroom or a free-standing surface.

Is cash appropriate for a housewarming?

Rarely. Unlike a wedding, a housewarming has no registry and no cost to offset, so cash reads as a transaction. A specific object aimed at an unfinished room is the point of the occasion.

How much for a group housewarming gift?

$15–$40 per person is the published band. Pooling is the standard way to buy the one nice thing nobody would put on their own list.
